Glamping Pod Industry Pioneers Receive £150K to Develop Prototype for Brand New Eco Building

Wigwam Cabins plan to introduce 6 new cabins to their site and develop brand new 'eco' lodge prototype.

Wigwam Cabins

Specialising in the construction of rural buildings from sustainable sourced timber, Wigwam Cabins is the UK’s largest provider of glamping pods and cabins.

Sole supplier to sister company Wigwam Holidays, each cabin is manufactured within the company’s 22,500 sq. ft. factory in Perth and then distributed to one of 87 franchised holiday sites across the UK. More recently however, Wigwam Cabins invested in its first fully owned glamping site, Wigwam Holidays Glenlivet, a luxury cabin site situated in the village of Tomintoul in the heart of the Cairngorms.

With the launch of the site in Tomintoul, Wigwam Cabins has been able to offer guests accommodation in one of 14 wooden cabins available on site and since opening, the site has exceeded visitor targets by 30%.

Plans to further develop the site required Director of Wigwam Cabins, Charles Gulland, to seek funding that would not only support the introduction of 6 brand new cabins onto the site by the end of 2023 but would also enable the business to develop a new ‘eco’ lodge prototype which would be suitable for multiple uses including glamping units, green office buildings and to meet the demand for affordable, low energy green homes for rural communities.

Reaching out to Business Loans Scotland (BLS), Wigwam Cabins successfully received a loan of £150,000 to support the growth and development plans of the site in Tomintoul.

Supporting small and medium sized businesses across Scotland with loans to start-up or grow, BLS offer loans from £25,000 to £250,000 to ensure that commercially viable proposals do not fail from a lack of access to finance.

Fully funded by the Scottish Government, BLS has issued loans to 164 businesses across Scotland to date totalling in excess of £13.2 million with loans being used for various purposes including to raise working capital, invest in office premises, increase marketing activity and to introduce new product lines to name a few.

Speaking of the loan issued, Fund Manager for Business Loans Scotland, Andrew Dickson said:

“Wigwam Cabins is a clear market leader and innovator within the glamping industry and I am delighted that Business Loans Scotland has been able to support the business with its plans to grow the site in Tomintoul and produce the first ‘eco’ glamping cabin. Producing these ‘eco’ buildings will have many benefits in today’s current economic climate and I wish the business continued success for the future.”
